The part of our brain that is responsible for our emotions is fluent in the language of breathing. When we breathe slowly, deeply, and rhythmically, we are telling our brain that everything is ok and in turn, our brain tells our emotions to calm and our heart rate to slow.
These exercises can be used while in the midst of a heightened emotional state, but we encourage your child to also practice these when they're feeling calm as a way to hone this important skill.
